A Day at Canyon Creek Ranch – A Customer Email

June 14th, 2011 Cowboy Chris

Before going to Scottsdale from the Boston area, I searched the internet for a place to horseback ride and have a cowboy dinner. There were several, however, every one I found put a lot of people in your group. Also, most of the people I contacted said they don’t do the dinners in the summer months.

The concierge at The Phoenician, where we stayed, recommended Canyon Creek. I knew it had to be good because she used to be a barrel racer, herself. We drove about an hour from Scottsdale and were met by Stephanie and Craig at a restaurant about 15 minutes from the ranch. Stephanie made us feel instantly at home and we followed them to the ranch. Our horses were all tacked up and ready to ride. I rode a gorgeous Percheron/Freesian mix named Widow. She was a gorgeous girl! All of the horses were in great shape and well cared for. The wranglers are careful to match the horse to your riding experience. Our wrangler guide, Craig, was actually the ranch manager. He was a third or fourth generation wrangler and he really “knew his stuff”, as well as being extremely personable. I even got some riding tips from him. Craig talked about all of the cacti and wildlife during our ride, and we even saw some ancient Indian petroglyphs. We rode for about an hour to “Old Town”, which is the most amazing replica of an old western town. They worked hard to furnish the buildings with furnishings from that time period.

You really felt like you were transported back in time. We stopped for a drink at the saloon, where you could have water, beer or soda. Then, we walked out and saw our delicious dinner of steak and chicken on the grill. The dinner also included a roll, corn on the cob, chili, a salad and apple pie! Everything was homemade and scrumptious. We were the only two people eating dinner that night because it was during the “slow season”, however, they made us feel like old, welcomed friends. After dinner, we got to have target practice with a 22 gauge pistol, something we had never done before, which was really fun. We got back on our horses and rode back to the ranch. I didn’t want to leave. Craig let me curry Widow and then his two sons showed us around. We saw Bunny, the new filly, and Black Jack, the buffalo. I honestly did not want to leave – it was like a dream come true for me. I cannot think of any negatives about this place, only positives. Ladies and gents should wear jeans to prevent chafing while horseback riding. Don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses and caps. Don’t worry about beverages – they have you covered there! Believe me, this is a “class act” run by really nice, down to earth people. You will not be disappointed. I plan to make the trip from Boston again just to go to Canyon Creek!

A customer letter about their horseback trail ride

March 6th, 2010 Cowboy Chris

One of our wrangler Joey got a really nice email from one of our customers who went on a horseback ride with her sisters at our Canyon Creek location.

Hi Joey! Because the photos required so much memory I have created a CD and will mail it to you at the Canyon Creek address. I also spoke to the concierge at the Marriott Canyon Villas and encouraged her to send people out for the day. Maybe you could convince some of those Marriott folks to come out and experience the ranch and all the activities. I think they would be more likely to promote the trip if they knew how much fun it is. Enough of marketing!
We had a fabulous day at the Canyon Creek Ranch. My two sisters and I all agree this day was the highlight of our trip to Phoenix. We appreciated your patience with our novice skills at riding as well as the “lunch time” events. I still can’t believe, at age 60, I finally shot a gun and I could hit the target!
The scenery during our horse back ride was unbelievable. I thought we’d just be riding around in a field. Ha! I was sure surprised! We appreciate so much you taking all the photos of our experience. The lunch was fantastic too!

From the time someone met us off the interstate, I’ve never met a more friendly group of cowboys and gentlemen. All of  you made us feel so welcome. Everyone’s humor was delightful!
When we come back to Phoenix, we’ll visit Canyon Creek Ranch again. Hopefully, we won’t be too old for you to get us up on a horse. Ha!  We can use a ladder.
Take good care of yourself and your family! Please let me know you received this email and when you receive the CD. Thanks!
Warm Regards,
Anne R. French, Ph.D.

Need Team Building Ideas in the Arizona Area???

February 28th, 2010 Cowboy Chris

Arizona gets annually about 5-6 inches of rain.  In the last 2 months some areas have received 8-13. It was 75 and beautiful all week.  Saturday arrives and gloom is in.  Hard rain in the morning with a group of 60 to arrive at 1:00.   We thought 12 would show.  2 big buses pull into the Ranch and everyone is accounted for.  3 teams of 20 and away we go.  1st crew onto horses to cross the river and work their way to coldwater(old town).

Group at the Creek Need Team Building Ideas in the Arizona Area???

Next 20 into 4×4′s across the river to old town for Foot Rodeo(Separating 3 steers from a herd of 12 and pushing those specific 3 into a pen for times), 3 rotation axe throw(about 30 ft),  .22 Ruger revolver shooting range(best of six wins), and the quick draw competition(best 2 of 3, man left standing wins).  The 3rd group is into the 4×4′s heading to the “Skeet” spot.  With 12 and 20 gauge shotguns over looking the Agua Fria River with 2 flyer’s operating at the same time the team with the most hits win.  Crazy how people love Skeet Shooting.

Guy at the axe throw Need Team Building Ideas in the Arizona Area???

They had 45-60 minutes to get through and then we rotate so each group has equal opportunity to experience everything.  Not a drop fell until they loaded back on the buses yelling and screaming.  2 Portuguese guys and and their translator I believe had the best times of their lives.  Don’t have a clue what they were saying but they were out of control.  It poured while we unsaddled.

Group Horseback Rides in Phoenix

February 28th, 2010 Cowboy Chris

The magic of a Horseback Ride in the Arizona Desert can’t be beat.

This past Wednedsay a saddle club went out to Canyon Creek Ranch just outside of Phoenix.  About 30 people did a horse back adventure and ate a meal in old town.

Horse adventures Creek Group Horseback Rides in Phoenix

After that everybody headed for the cowboy games.  Pistol range, axes, ropes, etc.  We all had a great day.

Friday around 1:42PM 12 people stepped off a bus to ride out at Pioneer Ranch.  There were 3 people that had never ridden a horse before. Love the virgins.  By the end those 3 guys were out on their own not even riding “the line”.  A group that was out in the Hummers at the same time met us back at Pioneer for open bar and “games”-Bows, axes, shoes, a little pitching(golf thing) and quick draw contest.  Great Crew.
